CHOICE Review

On the positive side, this is the first book to tackle comprehensively character development and physical activity. Shields and Bredemeier are respected in their discipline and have generally exercised care and precision in their writing. Their review of literature is extensive and their attempts to synthesize this review into a meaningful whole are praiseworthy. Examples of behavior representative of a theoretical construct are helpful but too infrequent. Valuable contributions are found in their suggestions for the structure of future moral action research and in their recommendations in the final chapter, "Promoting Moral Character Through Physical Education and Sport." On the negative side, two issues are largely ignored: Why does the discipline of physical education have any special responsibility for developing moral character? and, Why is there a conflict between the development of moral character and the importance Americans attach to outcome in competitive sports? Conclusions from studies that predate 1980 about females' motivations in sports are suspect because women have become more competitive in sports. The book is, however, a valuable resource for researchers and graduate students but is probably too complex for undergraduates. W. F. Gustafson; emeritus, San Jose State University
