Descripciones mejoradas de Syndetics:

This is a comprehensive introduction to the ethical issues at stake in the conduct of biomedical research, with extensive use of case examples. Its content parallels the recommendations of the Commission on Research Integrity, and deals with ethical issues in the use of animal and humans in research. It includes chapters on intellectual property, authorship, peer review, and conflicts of interest. As of October 2000, all personnel involved in research supported by the Public Health Service, including NIH, must receive the equivalent of 15 hours of training and education in research ethics. This book will be a convenient text for such short courses or seminars, and an excellent guidebook for all.

Includes bibliographical references (p. 315-338) and index.

CHOICE Review

Shamoo (Univ. of Maryland) and Resnik (National Institutes of Health) present an updated edition of their comprehensive introduction to research ethics (1st ed., 2003). Focusing on 12 central issues in research ethics, the authors offer a history and an overview of each issue along with case studies, discussion questions, and recommendations regarding best practices. Discussion of ethical theory is relegated to one chapter on ethical decision making. The treatment of humans and animals in biomedical research is the focus, but chapters on topics such as intellectual property, mentoring, conflicts of interest, and collaboration between academia and private industry will appeal to researchers outside the biomedical field. The primary audience for this volume will be actual practitioners of scientific research. Its concise style and pragmatic perspective will lend themselves well to the training programs in research ethics that many institutions now require. Those same features make it less appropriate as a text for more traditional bioethics courses or for general readers. On the other hand, undergraduates will find the meticulously referenced histories and overviews to be a valuable resource for research projects in bioethics. Summing Up: Recommended. Professionals/practitioners; researchers/faculty; lower- and upper-level undergraduates. M. W. Sontag College of Mount St. Joseph
