There are few areas of human endeavor in which precise communication is more important or in which its lack can have more devastating consequences than medicine. Edith Schwager, renowned medical editor, writer, and columnist, has created an insightful guide to improving clarity and accuracy in the writing and editing of medical works.

Highly instructive and equally enjoyable, the text covers common errors in grammar and usage as well as the special problems of medical writing--all in a clear and instantly intelligible style. Medical English Usage and Abusage is a must read for medical writers and editors, physicians, nurses, health care professionals, journalists, copywriters, and students.

Includes bibliographical references (p. 189-192) and index.

CHOICE Review

Designed to "improve clarity and accuracy" in medical writing, this book organizes into 20 chapters each chapter subsequently listing (for easy reference) its entries alphabetically. Written by the "Dear Edie" writer of the renowned column on writing in the American Medical Writers Association Journal, these chapters are practical and tested, as a sample of headings suggests: "Medical and Pharmaceutical Submission Pointers," "Loose Use," "Singular Plurals," "Dangerous Dyads and Triads," "Nouns as Modifiers," " Jargon," "Faddy and Supercilious Words," "Acronyms and Other Abbreviations," "Dictionaries and Thesauruses." Although Schwager does not address many issues of good medical editing (e.g., crutch verbs, collapsing prepositional phrases and relative clauses, avoidance of unnecessary the), she offers a wise, helpful book for all medical and allied health professionals as well as for journalists, copywriters, and students interested in medical topics. This book contains a solid bibliography, which is surprisingly dated in light of the 1991 copyright. And readers will discover an excellent index, particularly germane to this kind of book. Highly recommended for upper-level undergraduate and graduate libraries collecting science, health, and medical books and journals; dental, medical, and nursing school libraries; and other libraries specializing in allied health and medical collections.-C. B. Darrell, Kentucky Wesleyan College
