This book defines the relationship between liberation and cultural identity in the Latin American social reality--from a historically rooted, critical philosophy. Schutte explores the connections between the diverse political and intellectual movements for social liberation in Latin America since 1920. She analyzes the variety of attempts to give meaning to the complex and conflictive nature of Latin America's social reality, critiquing the work of Jose Carlos Mariategui, Samuel Ramos and Leopoldo Zea's early work, Gustavo Gutierrez, and Paulo Freire, among others.

Schutte's approach is philosophical with a distinctly interdisciplinary context. Her discussion of feminism brings the question of women's equality to the forefront of discussions on Latin American social thought. Concluding with the contemporary ethical and political implications, Schutte argues that liberation-oriented theories are sustained yet heterogeneous attempts to deal with Latin America's difficult economic, social, and political problems.

CHOICE Review

Schutte's study is not nearly so ambitious as the title suggests. Rather, this is a brief, clear, fairly well organized introduction for beginners to a few key aspects of cultural, ethnic, and national identity and liberation theology as they have evolved since the 1920s in Latin America. A specialist might wish for both more historical depth and greater breadth, but a newcomer might be relieved to find a plausible vade mecum for the works of Jos^D'e Carlos Mari^D'ategui, Samuel Ramos, Leopoldo Zea, Arturo Andr^D'es Roig, Jos^D'e Mart^D'i, Jos^D'e Vasconcelos, and Gustavo Guti^D'errez. Marism, indigenismo, psychoanalysis, national character, and efforts to rejuvenate the Catholic Church are all dealt with in more detail than feminism, which seems almost like an afterthought, but none of these topics is set in much greater context than the works of the individuals mentioned. In short, Schutte's book addresses an important gap in the extent literature, but does not go far toward filling it. General; lower-division undergraduate.
