These well-integrated essays analyze the key issues in contemporary inter-American relations very clearly. CHOICE Review

In an age in which US ties with Latin America have once again been placed on the back burner, it is refreshing to see a volume dedicated to exploring the future direction of this critical relationship. The editors, participants at a hemispheric conference held at the University of North Carolina, have developed a valuable compendium of articles on the key concerns facing the region. Mixing broad-based studies on the current state of US-Latin American relations with specific analyses of trade, debt, drugs, migration, and the environment, the book is both descriptive and prescriptive. The underlying theme--that inter-American relations are no longer defined in terms of strategic denial but rather are increasingly being guided by the forces of cooperation and partnership--is thoughtfully carried throughout the text. As with most edited volumes, some chapters are more helpful than others, but no obvious weak spots detract from the editors' stated mission. In particular, chapters by R. Espinal on the New Right in Latin America, J. Samuel Fitch on the military and human rights, and S. Sanderson on environmental issues are especially rewarding. The editors are to be commended for this compilation that emphasizes the continuing importance of inter-American relations. Graduate; faculty. M. J. Kryzanek; Bridgewater State College
