A gallery of American and Central American rogues exploit puppet regimes, revolutions, shady capital, cheap labor, US gunships, and anything else not nailed down. Here is the foundation underlying the economic and political conditions of Central America today, the current overt and covert relations between the US and Central American governments, and familiar fortunes and conglomerates with tidied-up public relations images. CHOICE Review

Langley and Schoonover focus on the motivations and activities of Sam "Banana Man" Zemurray and the legendary soldier of fortune Lee Christmas, in this account of US dollar diplomacy in Central America during the early 20th century. Langley's earlier work on US objectives in the region includes The Banana Wars: United States Intervention in the Caribbean, 1898-1934 (1985). Schoonover, whose The United States in Central America, 1860-1911 (1991) emphasizes major international rivalries in the isthmus, illuminates not only conflicting Yankee and German ambitions but also factors in establishing US domination in the region. Drawn largely from archival materials as well as from Hermann Deutsch's The Incredible Yanqui (1931), their fast-paced narrative details the exploits of Christmas in Honduras and Guatemala. Although lacking sources to support their analysis of Zemurray's machinations in creating "banana republics," their interpretation is convincing. Despite such shortcomings as the absence of a standard bibliography and an incomplete index, their study represents an important contribution to the literature on US intervention in 20th-century Latin America.
