Descripciones mejoradas de Syndetics:

The scope is confined to women's paid work, excluding contributions made on the home front. A 16-page introduction chronicling the history of women and work in America is followed by entries in A-Z arrangement, each with see also references and at least one bibliographic citation. Most entries are biographical, but others discuss issues, themes, categories of work, or organizations and institutions, e.g. academic women, apprentices, architects, artists, sexual harassment, nontraditional occupations, White House Conference on Children (1909). This reference is useful in particular for access to information about some lesser known important women. Annotation copyright by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Includes bibliographical references (p. 323-356) and index.

Library Journal Review

A timely subject, a clear writing style, and an easy-to-use format make this A-to-Z historical guide to women in the workplace lively and worthwhile. Written for the general reader by authors of other works on women (e.g., Sound Off: Military Women Speak Out , LJ 6/15/91), this distinctive work includes entries varying in length from one paragraph to several pages, with sources provided at the end of each. The profiles offer quickly accessible information on female pioneers and achievers, women's roles in occupations and professions, and significant historical events, laws, issues, and organizations affecting women. It also features a well-written introduction, a useful chronology, and an extensive bibliography. The scope of this reference is limited to women's contributions in terms of paid work and more specifically to individuals, ethnic groups, and ideas that the authors view as important. Therefore, inclusion is based on subjective criteria (for example, Sandra Day O'Connor and Carla Anderson Hills are included, but Anita Hill and Hillary Rodham Clinton are not). In addition, certain entries, like the one for the Occupational Outlook Handbook , seem irrelevant. Still, this relatively inexpensive work adds to the growing body of literature on women's issues. Recommended for women's collections.-- Marilyn Rosenthal, Nassau Community Coll. Lib., Garden City, N.Y. (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. CHOICE Review

A useful guide to the history of women and work in the US. Arranged alphabetically, entries treat issues, strikes, court cases, biographies, occupations, organizations, and events. They range in length from a brief definition of "sandwich generation" to a two-page entry on "protective legislation." Biographies average about 175 words. Entries include a see also section of cross-references and abbreviated bibliographic references. Complete citations are found in the lengthy bibliography at the end of the book. Well-written and well-organized, this guide also contains an introduction providing a historical overview, a chronology of events, and a subject index. As a glance at the approximately 50 black-and-white illustrations reveals, this work includes material on US minorities, such as Althea Gibson and Jesse De la Cruz. Entries cover historical material (e.g., "Triangle Shirtwaist Fire") and contemporary struggles (e.g., "Guerrilla Girls"). Although much of the information is available in other reference works, Women in the Workplace affords a handy guide to this important topic. Recommended for all levels. G. M. Herrmann; SUNY College at Cortland
