Library Journal Review

This work is designed to give takers of the SAT an understanding of the test's flaws and to provide pre-test strategies. Chapters on why the SAT is unfair, a bill of rights for test-takers, and other areas of pre-test-taking preparation are included. The middle section of the work provides concrete suggestions which will help the SAT-taker study and prepare for the test. The final two chapters explain how to challenge a poor score or a question you feel has another correct answer, and suggestions for helping make the SAT a more fair test. The majority of Weiss's work is devoted to challenging the need for the SAT and to strategies students can use to overcome a poor score. Most students' time will be better spent finding and reading a good SAT preparation manual. However, students who have specific handicaps will find the suggestions useful.-- Joanne Troutner, Tippecanoe Sch . Corp., Lafayette, Ind. (c) Copyright 2010. Booklist Review

"Remind yourself that the SAT is a narrow, irrelevant and silly excercise. It measures only a small part of your academic skills." The authors charge that the SAT is unfair, that the scores are often misused, and that the test is geared to upper-middle-class white males, discriminating systematically against lower-income, minority, female, bilingual, rural, and unusually clever or creative students. Here, they look at how the SAT testing process operates and how scores are used, and they give practical, step-by-step advice on how to prepare for and take all sections of the test. A proctor checklist, a list of organizations that support testing reform, testing and financial aid bibliographies, and forms for analyzing a practice SAT are appended. To be indexed. --Sally Estes
