Descripciones mejoradas de Syndetics:

Satterwhite analyzes the work of revisionist thinkers in four East European countries whose critique of the orthodox "official" Marxism laid the philosophical groundwork for the 1989-1990 upheavals in Eastern Europe and a reassessment of Marxist thought throughout the world.

CHOICE Review

Working out of a shared Marxist tradition and facing similar social problems in the years between WW II and the fall of communism, philosophers and sociologists in Eastern Europe developed a humanistic Marxism that sought to provide an alternative to the Marxism of the Soviet model. Satterwhite provides introductory sketches of this humanistic Marxism in Poland, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, and Yugoslavia. He discusses most of the major figures, providing both a short account of the social and political setting within which these works developed and an overview of some of the major themes discussed by each author. Although the theoretical discussion remains at an introductory level, Satterwhite provides a valuable complement to anthologies of these writings edited by Eric Fromm (Socialist Humanism, CH, Apr'66) and Gerson Sher (Marxist Humanism and Praxis, CH, May'79). Satterwhite's book also includes a bibliography of primary source material which will be of value to specialists. Advanced undergraduate; graduate; faculty. R.
