Based on the Chancery Cursive style, this title offers lessons in lettering and directions for 30 projects. Ryan, a commercial artist and author, details the basics, including equipment, the alphabet, decorative elements, hints for the left-handed, and corrections. She argues that once basic techniques are mastered, the individual should develop a personal interpretation of the lettering. As a result, her diagrams do not clearly detail each pen stroke or lift necessary to reproduce the characters with precision. Ryan is at her best when explaining the uses of calligraphy in everyday life and suggesting projects, including correspondence and invitations, labels, book plates, and posters. Fundamentals are important, however, and beginners will most appreciate the creative uses of the art form suggested here.
