Booklist Review

Gr. 6-10. Rummel's account of heavyweight boxing champion Muhammad Ali stresses his achievements in the ring but pays hardly any attention to his personal life. Thus, highlights of important fights are recapped, but there is comparatively little about Ali as a husband and father or about the real person behind the antics that became his style. Ali's accomplishments as a fighter-achieved through hard work and discipline as well as talent-will have something to say to young people despite the controversy over boxing as a sport and the fact that it has left Ali with a form of Parkinson's disease. The public champion is well sketched here, but for a deeper analysis readers will need to look elsewhere. Black-and-white photographs appear on nearly every page.
