Library Journal Review

This excellent, tightly constructed work was compiled for an audience interested in locating substantive background information sources dealing with the problem of homelessness in America. Hombs, Director of the National Coalition for the Homeless and co-author (with the late Mitch Snyder) of Homelessness in America ( LJ 4/1/83), reviews the subject and provides up-to-date references: source lists of involved individuals and organizations, pertinent federal legislation and court cases, excerpts from selected relevant documents, annotated bibliographies of related print and non-print materials, including accessible computerized databases. Very useful and highly recommended for general public and academic libraries.-- Suzanne W. Wood, SUNY Coll. of Technology, Alfred (c) Copyright 2010. School Library Journal Review

YA-- Concise chapters, factual data, a logical arrangement, and references to additional resources make this an excellent choice for reports. Themes such as the relationship of hunger, alcoholism, or mental illness to homelessness unite the summaries of relevant laws and testimonies before Congressional committees. Federal legislation and Supreme Court cases are analyzed briefly. The last half of the book is composed of annotated lists of organizations and reference material (both print and nonprint) complete with addresses and phone numbers so that more information can be readily obtained. The text is accessible and to the point. The book is dispassionate and objective, particularly when compared to the discussion style of Hyde's The Homeless: Profiling the Problem (Enslow, 1989) or Landau's The Homeless (Messner, 1987) . These are valuable to help students feel the problem; Hombs' book will help them research it. --Claudia Moore, W. T. Woodson High School, Fairfax, VA (c) Copyright 2010. CHOICE Review

Although the annual report of the Interagency Council on the Homeless, a document available free from that US government agency, provides a valuable statistical profile of the homeless and a current catalog of the governmental programs to meet their needs, its organization as an administrative report hampers its usefulness as a resource aid for students or the general public. There are no addresses or contact names included for the agencies listed, there is only a brief bibliography, and there are no indexes. Academic libraries would benefit more from Mary Ellen Hombs's American Homelessness: A Reference Handbook (1990) in the ABC-Clio "Contemporary World Issues" Series. Hombs (National Coalition for the Homeless) gives background information on the homeless; summarizes federal hearings, legislation, and court cases; supplies a directory, with addresses of private and public organizations serving the homeless; and has an annotated bibliography of books, media, and databases about the homeless. There is also a combined author, title, and subject index.-G. B. Thompson, Cleveland State University
