CHOICE Review

This handy guide by Rubin (Louisiana State Univ., Shreveport), one of a series of business dictionaries from Barron's, was first published in 1987 and has been updated ever since. With some 4,500 terms, it aims to "serve as a reference source for individuals making personal and business insurance planning decisions." The book was planned around the needs of insurance consumers and offers both brief and technical definitions of traditional insurance products. It addresses new products and conditions in this rapidly changing industry. Insurance can be organized into several major areas, including risk management, property and casualty insurance, health insurance, pensions, workers' compensation, social security, home insurance, auto insurance, liability insurance, and other categories such as underwriting, marketing, and distribution. Besides defining standard terms, this volume offers extensive definitions where warranted for other terms, including "coinsurance," "commercial crime coverage form," "defined benefit plan," "group health insurance," "irrevocable life insurance trust," and "Pension Protection Act of 2006," among others. The book includes extensive cross-referencing, a list of abbreviations/acronyms, and an explanation of abbreviations that are included in the alphabetical sequence. Summing Up: Recommended. Lower-division undergraduates and above; general readers. J. Levy University of North Texas Libraries
