CHOICE Review

Rowland's book on the adventure of research is a pleasure to read. His premise is that creative research by journalists, scholars, dramatists, novelists, or anyone with a propensity for investigation has a common element. Research, he believes, tells a story: fiction or nonfiction, the underlying structure is the narrative, whatever postmodernism, which Rowland dismisses, may say. Pursuing research as a quest transforms information seekers into creative explorers--guides who leave coherent clues for others to follow. Rowland himself tells a good story, blending details from his reporting in Canada and the US with solid advice about working with librarians, archivists, and government bureaucrats. As a journalist he focuses on people, offering tips about tracking characters, conducting interviews, following discussion lists, and using e-mail and the Web to advantage. The book's layout, editing, and indexing suffer from camera-ready production, and Rowland gets some details wrong ("biography" and "history" are not narrower terms in Library of Congress subject headings). But the book is affordable and meant to be read and contemplated, not consulted as a reference work. It belongs in academic and public libraries, suitable for readers at every level of the research quest. P. E. Sandstrom; Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne
