Library Journal Review

Winslade and Ross contend that even the most well informed patient or family member becomes confused and overwhelmed in a health crisis situation. They feel that if patients understand how the health care system works and if the patients know clearly what they want for themselves then their stay in the hospital should go more smoothly. The book looks at both of the above stated areas and uses case histories as examples. This book is more clearly written and much less caustic than Charles B. Inlander's Take This Book to the Hospital with You ( LJ 7/85), but it is not as strong a work in the area of medical ethics one might wish. Linda Morgan Davis, OCLC, Dublin, Ohio (c) Copyright 2010. CHOICE Review

Winslade and Ross have written a book examining many recent scientific and technological breakthroughs: kidney dialysis, genetic screening, embryo transfer, surrogate motherhood, organ transplantation, bone marrow transplantation, and extensive treatment for handicapped newborns. These advancements are discussed in terms of the implications for patients, families, health care professionals, and society. The authors use current precedent-setting cases as well as case study composites to illumine the many dimensions of these life and death decisions. The authors are especially adept at discussing these issues from a number of different perspectives, affording the reader an opportunity to consider the many dimensions of these issues that may touch one's life. Clearly and forcefully written, the book contains a short yet very helpful bibliography. Useful to all reader levels where there exists an interest in thinking about issues in health care and bioethics.-B.J. Gray, Eastern Kentucky University
