Library Journal Review

Written by a freelance writer who specializes in environmental issues, this handbook includes a good introduction to wilderness management in the United States, a chronology of wilderness landmarks (e.g., establishment of the National Park Service, Clinton's Forest Summit), and a chapter on influential environmentalists. Clearly presented statistical data and excerpts from the most influential wilderness laws (e.g., Endangered Species Act, Wilderness Act) are combined in one chapter. Also included is a well-organized listing of national parks, monuments, lakeshores, wildlife refuges, and seashores with accompanying brief description, address, and acreage of these federal lands. Finally, an annotated directory of federal agencies and private organizations and associations provides brief descriptions and addresses. Collection development librarians will find especially useful two annotated chapters devoted to identifying up-to-date print and nonprint resources. Much of this information can be found in the annual Complete Guide to America's National Parks (Fodor's) and in H. Steven Dashefsky's Environmental Literacy: Everything You Need To Know About Saving Our Planet (LJ 5/15/93), but combining all this information in one handbook results in a useful resource for high school, undergraduate, and public libraries.-Eva Lautemann, Dekalb Coll. CHOICE Review

Rosenberg has prepared a useful sourcebook of information on the issues and history of US wilderness preservation and conservation. The opening chapter provides a concise introduction to the history of wilderness preservation, management of wilderness areas, and the major issues surrounding the remaining open wilderness areas. Chapter 2 chronicles the historical events that have had the greatest impact on the American wilderness; chapter 3 provides short biographies of the major personalities from Muir to Watt who have influenced, for better or worse, wilderness preservation. Chapter 4 presents statistics on wilderness areas, a useful summary of legislation that has affected wilderness, and selected quotations from personalities on both sides of the issues. The remaining chapters contain annotated lists of protected federal lands, a directory of federal agencies and private organizations in which wilderness and wildlife are major concerns, selected print and nonprint resources, a glossary, and an extensive index. Data are summarized in seven figures and four tables. A good addition to the conservation, environmental science, wildlife, and forestry reference shelves. General; undergraduate through professional. R. L. Smith; West Virginia University
