CHOICE Review

This is a selective dictionary of 400 entries pertaining to electoral politics in the US. Words, concepts, organizations, and court decisions are grouped in several chapters with respect to political culture and public opinion, political participation, campaigns, elections, political parties, interest groups, and the media. A general index provides access to main entries and other names, events, and subjects mentioned in the text. Each entry consists of a lengthy, well-written definition, cross-references to related items, and a separate paragraph labeled "Significance" that places terms in their political context. Readers may question the inclusion or omission of certain entries, but overall the authors succeed in their stated purpose of compiling and explicating fundamental terms and operational concepts on their topic for a broad audience. A useful supplement to more comprehensive dictionaries such as Jay M. Shafritz's The Dorsey Dictionary of American Government and Politics (CH, Oct '88), which has 4,000 entries. Suitable for students of politics and libraries at all levels. -F. Oscadal, Dartmouth College
