CHOICE Review

Should industrial/organizational psychologists understand personality theory for their practice? For instance, should they recommend that job applicants take personality tests and that recruitment ads specify the personality characteristics required? The contributors of the 13 papers in this collection answer yes, and they make a convincing argument. The papers combine many practical prompts (e.g., the use of job-focused occupational personality scales) with some theoretical musings (e.g., on self-regulation in the context of self theory). Except for chapters 7 and 9, all the papers were presented at a 1999 conference, though even some of the latter include citations from 2000 and even 2001. The perspective is Western; contributors are mostly from the US, with some from Great Britain and Canada. Each paper is outlined in the first chapter, but none includes an abstract or summary (always helpful in a set of academic readings). Except for this and the occasional copyediting glitch, the book meets the usual high standards of American Psychological Association publications.
