Richard Nixon was elected while the nation was in the throes of the Vietnam conflict, promising to end it with honor. Several years later, he would resign from the presidency as the details of the Watergate scandal came to light. Yet despite the inglorious end of his short second term, he managed to accomplish much as president, including mending diplomatic relations with China and establishing the Environmental Protection Agency. This eBook examines the life and career of the 37th president. Excerpted from Richard Nixon by C. Peter Ripley All rights reserved by the original copyright owners. School Library Journal Review

Gr 6 Up Ripley succeeds in being non-judgmental as he tells of Nixon's beginnings in California and rise through national politics to become the 37th President of the United States and, finally, the only President to resign from office. The account is detailed, in proper context, and well balanced. Numerous black-and-white photographs and reproductions, quotations from Nixon's contemporaries, and a good chronology and bibliography enhance the book. Booklist Review

Gr. 6-10. Historian Ripley, author of Robert Kennedy in this series, provides a noteworthy analysis of Nixon in this biography of the former president. Opening with Nixon's 1974 resignation from the presidency, Ripley looks back over the man's youth and career to find a trail of corruption and abuse of power. Pointing out Nixon's political savvy, Ripley recalls his escalation of the Vietnam War on the heels of election promises for an honorable peace, while at the same time crediting Nixon with improving relations with the USSR and China. Due to its closer perspective of this pivotal U.S. figure, the biography is able to draw more decisive conclusions than do some other volumes on historical figures in this series. While some might quarrel with the advanced nature of the selections on the further reading list and the sometimes confusing photograph placement that finds pictures of Brezhnev and Moscow in a chapter on American domestic affairs, Ripley's cogent analysis carries this book, making it an excellent resource on the recent past.
