In an age of organizational restructuring and career uncertainty, with upward mobility becoming less and less attainable, how do people find meaning and fulfilment in their work? This book addresses this critical question, offering valuable, concrete suggestions to career development professionals working with clients who long to infuse their work with values.

Featuring the insights of leading counsellors and career development practitioners, educators, psychologists, clergy, and management experts, the eleven chapters in Connections Between Spirit and Work in Career Development explain how money, age, gender, and spirituality affect job satisfaction.

The authors examine changes that enhance the sense of wholeness in a career, offering illuminating examples showing how people have achieved the goal of balancing work, family life, relationships, and spiritual practice. Responding to the rapidly changing terrain of contemporary work life, this volume presents an extraordinary range of tools and options for career development professionals in their work with their clients.

CHOICE Review

The editors and contributors to this anthology are experienced academics, consultants, and practitioners. The "spirit" in the book's title refers to the nonmaterial, the potential relationships to God, family, community, nation, and the ethical workplace. Two key assumptions are that workplaces have become economically volatile and ties to religious meanings of labor have eroded. The result is that work has lost meaning except as a source of income, and this condition fosters hollow work lives and stimulates yearnings for more spiritual fulfillment. The sources of this spiritual emptiness and approaches to filling it, largely through career counseling, are examined by the contributors. Overall, the 11 chapters are intelligently written and provocative. The last chapter looks directly at the workplace. We are told that in the Middle Ages "Duty was a holy undertaking ... a person focused on the pride of a job well done for its own sake." The author goes on to propose that a share of those work-connected spiritual values can be reclaimed by encouraging workplaces to become ethically driven. Though a past spiritual golden age is doubtful and business organizations are unlikely to pursue spiritual revival, this chapter and the others make a persuasive case for leavening rampant materialism. This book, aimed at career development counselors, usefully attempts to unravel and deal with nonmaterial fulfillment in work and life. Most appropriate for professional collections. C.
