Cooperative learning is a term which has been used to describe a wide range of pedagogical strategies. Many college mathematics faculty are learning to use these approaches & are finding that they can greatly improve student learning. The editors of this volume have combed through the literature in the area of cooperative learning, to select the 17 papers presented here. They have used this material themselves in the various summer workshops, minicourses at regional & national meetings, & World Wide Web courses conducted on behalf of the MAA's project CLUME (Cooperative Learning in Undergraduate Mathematics Education). This project has received substantial funding from the National Science Foundation. Anyone who is interested in developing a deep understanding of cooperative learning will find much of interest in this volume. References at the end of each selection & an extended bibliography point to further readings.

Includes bibliographical references.

CHOICE Review

The editors have done an excellent job of selecting 17 papers that provide an exciting and thought-provoking introduction to the available literature on cooperative learning. The papers are grouped into three sections: a theoretical basis for cooperative learning and its relation to the teacher's role in the classroom; the available research on the effectiveness of cooperative learning; and implementation issues. Although newcomers to this pedagogical approach might be tempted to skip to the final section, the first two are essential reading for anyone considering this method. To help readers assimilate the material, the editors have provided stimulating introductions and follow-up comments and discussion questions for each reading. The extended bibliography is a valuable component for the many readers who will want to investigate further. Highly recommended. Graduates through professionals. J. M. Clark; Emory and Henry College
