Teaching American Indian Students is the most comprehensive resource book available for educators of American Indians. The promise of this book is that Indian students can improve their academic performance through educational approaches that do not force students to choose between the culture of their home and the culture of their school. This multidisciplinary volume summarizes the latest research on Indian education, provides practical suggestions for teachers, and offers a vast selection of resources available to teachers of Indian students.

Included are chapters on bilingual and multicultural education; the history of U.S. Indian education; teacher-parent relationships; language and literacy development, with particular discussion of English as a second language and American Indian literature; and teaching in the content areas of social science, science, mathematics, and physical education.

CHOICE Review

Formerly published as Teaching the Indian Child: A Bilingual/Multicultural Approach edited by J. Reyhner (1986), this new title (and publisher) represents a better organized and integrated edition containing much new, revised and updated theory, research, and practical information regarding the teaching of American Indian students. Reyhner, coauthor of A History of Indian Education (1989) and editor of Effective Language Education Practices and Native Language Survival (1990) has again focused his scholarly interests on editing this handbook and contributing four of the 18 articles. Well-integrated chapters are organized around five main topics; a third of the articles are new. The multicultural education section sets the overall theoretical framework and contains a new, collaborative article by two authors from the previous edition, along with an updated and revised chapter on the history of Indian education. Better placed, the instruction, curriculum, and community section has an excellent new lead chapter on adapting instruction to Indian culture, along with two revised articles that examine the overuse of textbooks and getting teachers and parents to work together. The language development section contains a new collaborative chapter by two previous authors on language and literacy development, a slightly revised article on oral language and a new article on American Indian English usage. The four articles on reading and literature have been updated. Teaching in the content areas includes revised and updated chapters on teaching science and physical education, as well as two replacement articles on social studies and mathematics. With substantial appendixes on Indian education statistics, literature and teaching resources, a comprehensive list of references, and a useful index, this new edition is an essential handbook for teaching American Indian students. Recommended for undergraduates, all levels; graduate students; faculty; tribal community college students; professionals. R. L. Brod; University of Montana
