CHOICE Review

This book is, in effect, a translation and revision of the original Dutch edition of Profiel van de Derde Wereld (Assen, 1978). The authors, professional geographers, have achieved an admirable, logical organization of a complex topic. The book includes separate, well-written sections on the rural-agricultural sector and the urban-industrial sector in Third World countries. The authors explain development theories in the context of an overview of alternative theories, and they then elaborate some of the more prominent theories. Of special interest are the timely case studies of Ethiopia, India, Cuba, and Taiwan; lengthy references appear at the end of each study. The authors provide criteria for their selection of the case studies. Numerous photographic illustrations, maps, statistical tables, and graphs enrich the discussions. A nine-page bibliography will be of special use to those pursuing some aspect of Third World problems in greater depth. This book, primarily concerned with human geography, is a useful supplement for undergraduates studying economic development; it should also be of interest to the general reader.-C.L. Nelson, Davidson College
