Library Journal Review

Unlike many of the current "worker as victim" titles jamming the bookshelves, this work by career development specialist Reinhold is more than merely a diatribe against the evils of corporate America. Emphasizing the inseparability of work satisfaction and emotional and physical well-being, she draws upon mind-body research and holistic health approaches to help readers combat work-induced stress, which may lead to serious health problems. Reinhold argues repeatedly that regardless of how frightful a work situation may be, we are all ultimately responsible for our own personal, physical, and professional health. To that end, she provides a smorgasboard of insights and tips to help us anticipate and defuse problems at work and recommends the use of consultants/psychotherapists, efficiency experts, conflict resolution specialists, and nutritionists. Concrete solutions to work problems include "flight" (i.e., seeking new employment) or "fight" (i.e., confronting one's problems head-on). This is good medicine. Strongly recommended for both business/career and self-help collections.‘Alan Farber, Northern Illinois Univ., DeKalb (c) Copyright 2010. Publishers Weekly Review

This targeted, practical manual gets down to brass tacks from its opening sentence: "An estimated twenty million Americans are staying in jobs they hate in order to keep their health insurance-when research indicates that career dissatisfaction is more likely than anything else to make them need to use it." Reinhold, a business consultant as well as director of career development and adjunct professor of psychology at Smith College, points out that there are plenty of good reasons for dissatisfaction in today's work force. Having begun by taking employee complaints at face value, she proceeds to offer concrete, sensible suggestions for alleviating them. While citing cases of work-induced health problems ranging from bronchitis to overweight, she illustrates how there is hope for even the most beleaguered worker in today's high-pressure business environment. What is most important, she stresses, is to identify what is really bugging you-whether it's anxiety, anger or lack of self-confidence-then take steps to allay those feelings and regain a sense of control over your life. To these ends she offers a variety of probing self-tests, illuminating case histories and sequenced, focused suggestions for transforming workplace problems into opportunities for growth. Footnotes and an extensive bibliography add to the riches. BOMC, Money Book Club and QPB featured alternate. (May) (c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC. All rights reserved

Booklist Review

Psychologist Reinhold spells out the connection between work and health and, most important, describes proactive mechanisms for achieving a balance between the two. That delicate balance she calls VITAL (Vision/values, Intelligence, Touch/training, Attitude, and Love), and it is applicable both to individuals and to corporations as a whole. More-than-adequate success stories vividly demonstrate how well VITAL actually works. --Barbara Jacobs
