Descripciones mejoradas de Syndetics:

Since the appearance of Isabel Allende's first novel, "La casa de los espiritus" ("The House of the Spirits") in 1982 and its subsequent translations into several languages, readers world-wide have been fascinated with her refreshing depiction of Latin American reality and the role of women in its development. The publication of "De amor y de sombra" ("Of Love and Shadows") in 1984 and of "Eva Luna" ("Eva Luna") in 1987 have drawn more well deserved attention from readers and critics. This timely book, explores Allende's three novels, providing much needed criticism in English and Spanish. The essays examine her novels from a broad range of perspectives, ranging from the political control to the power of words, from direct testimony to fictional story-telling, from symbolism in characters' names to the meaning of dress and attire, from the picaresque tradition to the parodic writing in contemporary Latin American Literature."

English and Spanish.

CHOICE Review

The niece of Chile's assassinated leader Salvador Allende exposes her country's grief and suffering through her novels La casa de los espiritus (1982), De amor y de sombra (1984), and Eva Luna (1987). This collection of critical essays, some in English, some in Spanish, examines a myriad of perspectives to reading Allende's works. A well-written introduction suggests a context based upon a "feminine way of thinking and its concrete manifestation through writing." Following are four essays dedicated to La casa de los espiritus, ranging in theme from the power of prostitution to redundant comparison to Garcia Marquez's Cien a~nos de soledad (1967). Another four essays offer a wider variety of perspectives on De amor y de sombra, including the delineation of the historical reality that motivated this novel. Six essays analyze Eva Luna, two of which repeat the idea of the novel's relation to the picaresque tradition. Last, a personal interview with Isabel Allende reveals her process of creating a novel as well as the relationship among her works, Latin America, and its future. Overall, this collection of criticism sheds light on one of Latin America's most representative contemporary authors. Recommended for faculty, graduate students, and advanced undergraduates. N. J.
