School Library Journal Review

Gr 6-Up‘A series title that focuses on everyday life in the South and the changes brought by the Civil War. Reger describes the planters and the subservient existence of upper-class women; he also explains the intricacies of the slave social hierarchy and their daily lives. Extensive quotes from firsthand accounts, such as diaries, provide a full picture of this often-stereotyped lifestyle. Next, the author concentrates on the other 80 percent of Southern society. Most of the Confederate Army was made up of middle-class workers and farmers, whose lives contrasted greatly with those of the planters. Particularly interesting is the juxtaposition between the daily lives of middle-class women and those of the planters' wives. The text is peppered with interesting sidebars‘for example, the introduction of toilet paper and the proper etiquette for a stagecoach trip ("Spit on the leeward side"). The extensive notes and the annotated list for further reading and bibliography are useful. Black-and-white photos and reproductions appear throughout; some stereotypical illustrations of slaves are included‘they are of the historical era, but might need to be discussed with younger students. On the whole, a balanced account of life before Reconstruction that should fill a gap in many collections.‘Elizabeth M. Reardon, McCallie School, Chattanooga, TN (c) Copyright 2010.
