Library Journal Review

This revised and updated work (1st ed., Watson-Guptill, 1988) is a somewhat handy reference source for chronologically pinpointing greater and lesser events concerning rock music bands and solo acts. The guide is arranged alphabetically by group or solo artist surname, and each short entry (rarely more than a sentence or two) contains a wealth of bite-sized information. The entries for group acts list personnel. While generally informative and even fun to read, especially from the 1980s forward, some minor discrepancies (for example, rock legend Gene Vincent's date of death) are nagging. The London-based authors select acts popular on both sides of the Atlantic, yet there are questionable omissions: Freddie Cannon, Joe Ely, and the Fabulous Thunderbirds, among others. The British orientation may limit the book's desirability for American libraries. Still, it would find use among fans interested in the general development of their favorite groups and soloists. An optional purchase for libraries that don't have the earlier edition.-- David M. Turkalo, Social Law Lib., Boston (c) Copyright 2010. CHOICE Review

Rock Movers and Shakers (1st ed., 1989) is a reasonably inclusive treatment of the key rock and roll performers and groups from the mid-1950s to the present. Arranged alphabetically, the entries are much more thorough than those in similar works such as Norm N. Nite's now dated Rock On (v.1, CH, May'75; v.3, CH, Feb'86). This expanded treatment includes considerable personal information on the performers, major tours undertaken, changes in band membership, legal entanglements, and a wide variety of other interesting facts. Oddly, this wealth of information somewhat compromises the discography component of the work as releases are mixed chronologically with all other data. The listing of recordings in boldface does mitigate this drawback somewhat. The strength of this work is, however, clearly in the ready access to a straightforward, nonjudgmental presentation of all of the basic factual information (and then some) that a reference librarian might require regarding any significant rock performers. In spite of the small print that discourages extended reading, rock fans will find this volume a treasure for browsing as well. Highly recommended to college and public libraries.-C.
