Booklist Review

Reed presents a lot of ideas based on practical experience in sort of a how-to tome on getting support for the library at local, state, and national levels. She espouses librarians' becoming activists for public support and tells them the fight begins with defining the problem and working with library trustees. Methods detailed for successfully gaining local public support include telephone campaigns, community groups, mailings, media campaigns, flyers, etc. On state and national support-gathering levels, Reed discusses the cooperative role librarians can play with each other in staging legislation days and celebration days, honoring supportive legislators, building coalitions, writing letters, and much more. Several examples of useful documents are included in this study that's much more readable than the word study implies. ~--Patrick Dewey
