CHOICE Review

Many who have labored as social scientists in environmental fields might have hoped that by 1995 the importance of multidisciplinary, if not interdisciplinary, perspectives would be apparent. In their introduction to this edited volume, Redclift and Benton document that among those dealing with issues of the global environment this is clearly not so. In fact, there is evidence that social sciences are being excluded from important discussions concerning global warming, ozone depletion, acid rain deposition, and other issues of worldwide concern. The editors show convincingly that research on the environment occurs at different points of convergence, and that the absence of an interdisciplinary perspective hinders essential understanding of the nature/society relationships. The essays in this collection, published in association with the Economic and Social Research Council's Global Environmental Change Programme, provide the reader with an understanding of both the strengths and weaknesses of various approaches discussed. Presentation of the limits of the neoclassical approach, for example, helps the reader learn how economics can become a more effective tool in environmental problem solving. Greater integration of the social and physical sciences in this endeavor is clearly a desirable outcome. Upper-division undergraduates and above. A. L. Nieves; Wheaton College (IL)
