The global system has become increasingly complex, and notwithstanding the end of the Cold War and the liberalising of the world economy, there are new threats and new problems that require carefully thought-out responses, rather than ad hoc solutions and approaches. Caribbean Survival and the Global Challenge is such a collection of carefully thought-out responses by some of the region's leading voices on the broad range of implications created by globalisation for Caribbean states, and the development options emerging from the changes in the regional and international environment.

Includes bibliographical references and index.

CHOICE Review

This sizable book examines major challenges posed by globalization for small Caribbean states. The introduction places globalization in historical perspective, and a final section assesses prospects for development finance for small states in an increasingly competitive global setting. Several chapters call for some kind of comprehensive strategy for the region to cope with globalization, but the nature of such a strategy is not spelled out, and the final section does not provide overall conclusions. The bulk of the book focuses on economic challenges of globalization for the small Caribbean states; other sections examine state and foreign policy in a global setting; size, resources, and strategy in the global economy; trends in bilateral relations and regional cooperation; challenges for democracy in the Caribbean; international trade policy; and liberalization, globalization and the Caribbean financial sector. The chapters are nearly all strong and well organized. Most of the authors including the editor are from the region and fully recognize the problems posed by globalization for small states and the need for integrated, appropriate responses. However, there is considerable repetition; greater attention to political and strategic aspects of globalization would have provided a more comprehensive treatment. Summing Up: Recommended.
