School Library Journal Review

Gr 6 Up-- An accurate accounting of the Mexican Revolution and the role that Zapata played in that revolution. Zapata's skillful ability to strategize and mobilize his peasant army of agrarian reformists and his unwillingness to compromise his values and ideals become evident. Because the book is detailed in its coverage of the constantly changing events that beset the revolution, their presentation may be confusing. However, a useful chronology will keep students on track with the constantly changing of the guard that took place during this tumultous period. The accompanying black-and-white photographs of the Mexican Revolution will also serve to keep students' interest in the events of the period, if not on the key players. It is lamentable, however, that the archival photographs are not labeled, especially since some are classic works from the Casasola Collections, a well-known collection that has been exhibited throughout the United States numerous times. --Oralia Garza de Cortes, Houston Public Library (c) Copyright 2010. Booklist Review

Gr. 6-9. These two biographies continue the series' track record of heavily illustrated, lucid reportage. Condit describes Haiti's turbulent past as a prelude to examining Franois Duvalier's rise to power. The country's tremendous poverty and the failure of either Franois or his son, Jean-Claude, to help their people is a prominent theme, with Condit's coverage end~ing on a justifiably pessimistic note. Ragan's portrayal of Emiliano Zapata is sympathetic in its treatment of the revolutionary leader who advocated land reform to improve the lot of poor farmers. He makes clear the tremendous class differences that sparked Mexico's revolutionary movements and notes that Zapata remains a symbol of integrity. Recommended where curriculum demands in-depth biographies of these men. --Denise Wilms
