Publishers Weekly Review

Soraya-singer, songwriter, guitarist, and record producer-had already reached artistic peaks she could only have imagined as a child, when she was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer in June 2000. This is the story of her tragic family history of breast cancer, her personal fight against the disease, and her crusade to help break the cultural taboo that keeps Hispanic women from asking questions and getting the facts about preventive measures and early treatment. Born in New Jersey of Colombian and Lebanese descent, she spent her early years in Colombia, surrounded and inspired by the strong women of her extended family. She demonstrated her musical genius very early, learning to play the guitar at age five and performing at Carnegie Hall when she was 12, as a violinist with New York's Juvenile Symphonic Orchestra. In a career that spanned ten years, Soraya produced five albums, won the Latin Grammy for Best Song Writing in 2004, and received a Latin Grammy nomination for Best Female Pop Vocal Album in 2005. Written shortly before her death in May 2006 of the same disease that also took her mother, grandmother, and beloved aunt, this is a moving and uplifting message about personal empowerment, self-control, and awareness. In an industry where beauty and physical attributes can make or break a career, Soraya took great risks in going public with her condition because she believed her message needed to be heard by Hispanic women and men. Sales proceeds will be donated to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Highly recommended for all public and academic libraries and bookstores serving Spanish speakers.-Yolanda J.
