CHOICE Review

In December 1994 Mexico entered its worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. The people of Mexico paid dearly for the crisis in terms of increased unemployment and lower incomes. Much has been written on the domestic (Mexican) consequences of the crisis, but fundamentally it is an international crisis with international implications. Roett's edited volume brings together highly eclectic views of the crisis from an international perspective. Contributors examine the crisis from the perspectives of the US, Brazil, Argentina, and Europe as well as Mexico. Their collective portrait of the crisis is not a pretty picture. Blame for its origins can be widely shared. Although Mexican economic policy was often inappropriate and inept, the policies of the US and the broader international financial community toward Mexico were hardly exemplary. Worse still, there is little reason to think that Mexico's problems have been solved. In sum, this short, timely, and informative book will be controversial but widely read. For readers who want a concise introduction to the complexity of the Mexican crisis, this book is an excellent choice. All levels. J. T. Peach New Mexico State University
