This is a review and synthesis of the literature on white-collar crime. It is an attempt to encourage critical thought about the nature of crime, law, and criminal justice by examining white-collar crime. One of the unique themes of the work is an ongoing comparison between white-collar and conventional crime with the implication that learning about white-collar crime simultaneously teaches us something about conventional crime and criminal justice.

Includes bibliographical references (p. [155]-167) and index.

CHOICE Review

Poveda (sociology, SUNY Plattsburgh) has also written Lawlessness and Reform: The FBI in Transition (1990). The basic thesis of the present book, not especially original but arguably deserving of ongoing promotion, is that society resists regarding white-collar crime as "real" crime, despite the fact that its consequences are more substantial than those of conventional crime. At least some of the research literature (mentioned only in passing here) suggests an expanding public perception of the seriousness of white-collar crime. The first part of this book examines some of the conceptual issues pertaining to white-collar crime, some of the alleged myths about it, and some elements of the "double standard" in responding to it. Part 2 identifies some of the key, pertinent facts and some of the principal theoretical explanations. Part 3 discusses the traditional approaches to controlling white-collar crime, the thesis that the legal response to white-collar crime has been more symbolic than real, and some alternative contemporary strategies for doing something about it. Altogether this is a generally well-informed if somewhat concise and selective survey of the white-collar crime literature. Upper-division undergraduate and up. D. O. Friedrichs; University of Scranton
