CHOICE Review

Of the 152 articles in this encyclopedia on national systems of education, 142 were drawn from the second edition of International Encyclopedia of Education (CH, Oct'94), updated as necessary by their authors, and ten, on Algeria, Bolivia, Brazil, Cambodia, Congo, Czech Republic, Ecuador, Haiti, Slovak Republic, and Western Samoa were commissioned for this work. It intends to present a first impression of each country's system that describes both its essential features and any special aspects. Each article has 12 standard sections: (1) general background; (2) politics and goals of the educational system; (3) formal structure; (4) administrative and supervisory structure and operation; (5) finance; (6) supplying personnel (teaching versus nonteaching personnel, teacher training); (7) curriculum development and teaching methodology; (8) systems of examinations, promotions, and certification; (9) educational assessment, evaluation, and research; (10) major reforms in the 1980s and 1990s; (11) major problems in the year 2000; (12) references and further reading. The work ends with a name index and list of contributors. A subject index was omitted because the work's tight structure made comparisons between countries easy. The articles are comprehensive, edited to be of uniform structure, and contain ample tables, figures, and a diagram of the country's educational structure. Most countries of the former Soviet Union were not included at the time of compilation (except for Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Russia), but the editor intends to publish a revision every four to five years; the next edition may well provide coverage of these states. Highly recommended for all collections in education. C. Zlatos; Washington State University
