CHOICE Review

This is a fascinating contribution to one of the most crucial controversies concerning the relationship between the rate of growth of population and the rate of growth of resources to sustain it. The intellectual contest between the pessimism of the neo-Malthusians, Club of Rome, Zero-zero school, and antinatalists, and the optimism of the pronatalists, is far from resolved. In no one work since the publication of The Limits to Growth by Donella H. Meadows et al. (CH, Nov '73), and the response to it in Models of Doom, ed. by H.S.D. Cole et al. (1973), has the controversy been reformulated with such clarity, completeness, and objectivity as by Kasun. She uses an impressive volume of statistical evidence to refute one of the widely accepted false dogmas of our time--that "population explosion" endangers economic development and even survival of our planet. Systematically and relentlessly the writer demolishes the claims of modern neo-Malthusians and antinatalists that unless rapid population growth is contained by all-out international, national, and private efforts, humans will face economic and ecological catastrophe. She regrets that the persistent disinformation campaign to promote the unexamined antinatalist dogma has succeeded in creating a powerful international population-control industry promoting a costly policy, based on a gross misconception of reality yet enforced on the taxpayers and people who largely disapprove of it. Highly recommended for public and academic libraries. -O. Zinam, University of Cincinnati
