Library Journal Review
Although replete with nuggets of practical information on personal finance and consumer issues, the broad-spectrum approach of this title makes its practicality questionable. In an encyclopedia format, the authors try to impart ways to apply business principles to everything from ``Accountants'' to ``Weddings.'' Entries on true financial issues such as dealing with credit bureaus and surviving an IRS audit contain useful, if brief, information. More complete treatment would have been possible had such topics as ``Disputes with Neighbors'' and ``Social Climbing'' been eliminated. Lists such as ``when to lease a car'' and ``warning signs of crooked tax preparers'' are the most useful feature. Suggestions for additional reading for each entry would also have been helpful. The brevity of coverage and scattershot approach make this a marginal purchase for most libraries. Terry Savage Talks Money ( LJ 5/15/90) provides a more thorough and professional treatment of this subject.--Sandra F. Gerow, Sturgis P.L., Mich. (c) Copyright 2010. There's no substitute for life experience in making sound decisions about doctors, health insurance, and even gratuities and vacations; unfortunately, that sort of education is not taught in Life 101 at school or through well-meaning parents and relatives. No matter what life stage--recent graduate, newly divorced homemaker, or mid-career adult--financial consultant Pollan has the answers, ordered in more than 120 alphabetical topics from accountants to weddings. Opinionated? Definitely. Controversial? Absolutely. And, occasionally, some of the answers skim too briefly over the facts, needing more substance. Nonetheless, these are smart, often thought-provoking tips from a savvy point of view. (Reviewed Sept. 1, 1991)0671749226Barbara JacobsNotas de autor provistas por Syndetics
