Emerging from the Poets House (NYC) 1992 Poetry Publication Showcase, this new annual, organized by publisher and indexed by author and title, lists about 1,000 books by some 300 large and small publishers across the country, with full purchase information for each title. A small but auspicious start to what should become a standard reference. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.

Includes indexes.

Library Journal Review

A New York-based clearinghouse that aims to promote poets and their works, Poets House here provides a catalog of 400 American publishers of poetry books that appeared between June 1991 and June 1993. Librarians will find this an especially helpful source for the names and addresses of these "commercial, university and independent" publishers, many of which are unavailable in other sources. The editors say that their "guiding principle is inclusiveness rather than selection" and that their ultimate goal is to list all poetry books in print. For now, over 1200 books are listed alphabetically by author's last name, with valuable descriptions and data for ordering. Also included are excerpts from published reviews, recommendations from other poets, or "descriptive prose written by the publisher"‘all of which are essentially promotional blurbs without critical distinction that the editors should consider eliminating. They might also consider addressing the issue of the difference between published and self-published books. Nevertheless, this is a commendable directory full of information unavailable elsewhere. CHOICE Review

According to the introduction, this is the first edition of what is hoped will become "a buyer's guide for poetry readers, a publishing guide for poets, and a map of the current status of poetry publishing in America." The directory entries (based on the June 1992 Poets House Poetry Publication Showcase) list in alphabetical order US publishers of poetry regardless of size and provide bibliographic data for volumes of poetry they published in 1992 or earlier. The directory is planned as an annual cumulative publication that will develop into a "poetry books in print." Since many of these titles are not included in standard sources and are not widely reviewed (if at all), this project has the potential to provide a valuable service to American poetry and to bibliography. The value of this first effort will determine its future success as an annual publication. The current issue has indexes by authors and editors and by title. If nothing else, the unique hardiness of poetry is made clear; it is truly refreshing to note such publishers of poetry as Burning Deck (Rhode Island), Lovenut Press (New Jersey), and Pig Iron Press (Ohio) side by side with Alfred A. Knopf and Yale University Press. Something of a gamble but well worth it at the price. Research libraries collecting bibliographies for the future will most certainly want to consider this. R. S.
