CHOICE Review

The original edition of this book (Burnout: From Tedium to Personal Growth, CH, Sep '81) was a pioneering work in its field. In this extremely readable revision, Pines and Aronson have expanded their focus beyond the helping professions to include corporate America, with chapters on burnout in management and in bureaucratic organizations. They also address the problems of interpersonal relationships, with a chapter on the spillover of burnout from work to marriage. Data and case studies from burnout workshop participants tie the book together. Other authors are cited in endnotes; however, there is no comprehensive list of references. For public and college libraries. -J. A. Halpert, De Paul University

Booklist Review

Job burnout-characterized by low morale, absenteeism, depression, alienation, and stress-plagues some professions more than others. Basing their conclusions on a study of more than 5,000 individuals, as well as personal experience giving numerous workshops, Pines and Aronson identify the symptoms and causes of this modern phenomenon. The idealistic person, especially someone in the ``helping professions,'' seems most affected. (According to the authors, ``In order to burn out, the person needs to have been on fire at one time.'') Also at higher risk are people in management positions in bureaucratic organizations or those who have dual roles, such as working mothers. Suggestions are offered on understanding and coping with burnout in order to ultimately turn it into a positive growth experience. An insightful and practical study. Notes, bibliography; to be indexed. MES. 158.7 Work-Psychological aspects / Burn out (Psychology) [OCLC] 88-2813
