CHOICE Review

Illustrative of the format of the new Twayne series, this volume offers (1) close readings of individual stories (for about half the book), followed by (2) biographical and autobiographical snippets illuminating aspects of the writer's life, (3) brief excerpts from key critical studies, and (4) a chronology, select bibliography, and index. Concentrating on O'Connor's "modern consciousness," Paulson in her analyses of O'Connor's stories points to philosophical, psychological, and sociological subtleties that have too often gone unremarked. But by deliberately eschewing what she believes is the overworked theological approach to O'Connor, Paulson ultimately gives us a perversely incomplete portrait of a writer who insisted that her work was centered on the mystery of the Incarnation. In doing this, she severely limits her volume's usefulness as an introductory guide. On the plus side, the use of previously unpublished O'Connor manuscripts enriches both Paulson's story analyses and her compilation of biographical materials; and the condensed essays from 26 American and international critics round out Paulson's own insights. It is regrettable, though, that the bibliography does not include a list of individual stories and their publication data. For college and community college libraries. -A. J.
