Library Journal Review

This reference is an excellent source of data about foster care, adoption agencies, private facilitators, support groups, and biological parenthood options. Arranged alphabetically by state, it also has summaries of adoption laws for each state, D.C., and six foreign countries. The ``How-To-Use'' section is a must read for effectual use, and geographical and alphabetical subject indexes make finding entries easy. Included is an annotated reading list, glossary, and address list, ``Where to Write for Vital Records.'' Disturbingly, many typographical errors appear in the book, even in this final bound version. In addition to correcting these errors, this reference's value would be enhanced if material on the Child Welfare League, the Interstate Compact on Placement of Children, and the Uniform Adoption Act (1971) were added. If kept up to date (the publisher plans to update every few years), this will be a useful reference for large public libraries. Gale plans to correct typographical errors in future editions.--Ed.-- Susan M. Dunn, Woodbury Cty . Law Lib., Sioux City, Ia. (c) Copyright 2010. CHOICE Review

The Adoption Directory is meant to supply prospective parents with relevant information about their available options. The information was compiled by distributing copies of a questionnaire specifically designed by Paul to elicit information that would give the reader a clear sense of what the respondent could and could not provide. The directory begins with a clear explanation of how the book can best be used. The first and largest section of the text is arranged by state. It describes the official policy on adoption issues for each state. This is followed by a list of public agencies as well as a list of private agencies for each state. Other options and resources are presented in sections titled "Adoption Exchanges," "Foster Care," "Biological Alternatives," and "Support Groups." In addition, one section explains how to locate vital records; another covers immigration requirements. The directory also includes geographic, alphabetical, and subject indexes as well as a glossary. Besides aiding prospective parents, this well-prepared, highly informative reference tool will identify networking options for adoption professionals, physicians, pregnancy counselors, attorneys, independent adoption facilitators, and support groups. Highly recommended. M. Clark Yale University
