Booklist Review

A specialist in human sexuality and rape prevention takes a straightforward look at acquaintance rape, contending that while an individual may well make her- or himself vulnerable to attack (by drinking too much, for example), forced sex or sex performed under the threat of coercion is a criminal act that is not the fault of the victim. Making clear the distinction between rape by a stranger and rape by an acquaintance, Parrot explores the myths associated with rape, and examines sex-role stereotypes and specific behaviors (personifying the penis, sending mixed sexual signals to a companion, etc.) that contribute to the ``date rape dynamic.'' Though she concentrates largely on date rape and on its female victims, the author incorporates an excellent section on the special problems male victims face. Throughout, she relies heavily on direct examples of acquaintance rape situations to clarify the nature of the crime, as well as the legal, social, and emotional prejudices and misconceptions associated with it, and includes information on getting help, along with some sensible strategies for self-protection. A forthright, nonjudgmental analysis of a sobering, controversial social problem. Appended are a glossary, bibliography, listing of further resources, and an index. Gr. 9-12. SZ.
