CHOICE Review

Paniagua presents guidelines for providing services sensitive to cultural diversity, in a book that will be useful for anyone (therapists, human service providers, teachers, business personnel, etc.) who delivers services to people of varying cultural groups. Paniagua (Univ. of Texas Medical Branch), who teaches cross-cultural mental health seminars, discusses the impact of racism, poverty, discrimination, and cultural values on African American, Hispanic, Asian, and Native American clients. Guidelines for the initial interview, subsequent therapy, and prevention of attrition for each group and subgroup are detailed. Paniagua even suggests specific language to address sensitive issues. The discussion of the potential impact of group membership, acculturation level, language, and folk beliefs is thought provoking. Paniagua also suggests practical ways to diminish the impact of cultural bias in interpretation of psychological tests. Although some topics merited further exposition, and at times general principles rather than specific examples would have been helpful, this work brings together specific information that may be useful to those working with culturally diverse individuals. Upper-division undergraduate through professional.
