CHOICE Review

Sicker examines the close intellectual and historic interrelationship of Judaism, Jewish nationalism, and the land of Israel. For most of Jewish history these concepts were intertwined with the divinely ordained mission of serving as a model Torah-based, moral society for other nations. The author traces the impact of these nationalist ideals and aspirations through the centuries of exile and the diaspora experience. Sicker's argument that secular Zionism can be characterized best as an aberration is weak. It was secular Zionism rather than the centuries of religious longing that accomplished the creation of modern Israel. Sicker is on even shakier grounds when he asserts, without any evidence, that secular Zionism is "no longer a viable concept" and that religious nationalists are the vibrant "resurgent" force in modern Israel. He also identifies the "ideal Torah" state as one that holds "Judea and Samaria," rather than one committed to the ethical admonitions of the Torah. Thus, the ultimate appeal of this book will be to like-minded ideologues. L. Mayo; County College of Morris
