CHOICE Review

Ostrom's detailed survey of Hughes's short fiction focuses our attention on an often underestimated or overlooked aspect of Hughes's prolific career. Tracing the chronological development of Hughes's short stories, beginning with the sharp social criticism of The Ways of White Folks (1934), Ostrom provides an excellent overview of his narrative art. Ostrom's study is essentially a thematic one, but he remains alert to Hughes's relationship to literary and political movements--the Harlem Renaissance, literary modernism, Marxism--and to his changing aesthetic and political views. The second part of Ostrom's study draws upon excerpts from Hughes's speeches, essays, and autobiographies to provide a sense of his own views about his life and career; the third surveys reviews, articles, and critical assessments of his short fiction. An excellent bibliography offers a generous sampling of Hughes's work and of scholarship and criticism on him. This work should appeal to Hughes scholars and general readers alike. Highly recommended for all collections. J. A. Miller; Trinity College (CT)
