CHOICE Review

This excellent work successfully accomplishes its main objectives; that is, to challenge the current conviction of the unmanageability of the patient with Alzheimer's disease, and to offer useful treatment strategies to effect optimal functioning in the patient and family. The book is comprehensive in scope: physiologic, emotional, and behavioral aspects of Alzheimer's are delineated within the contexts of individual, family, and community systems assessments. Critical distinctions between acute and residual manifestations of dementia are made, and variable family member responses to changing conditions of the patient are used as the basis for recommended interventions. The book's strength lies in the artful synthesis of theory and clinical experience through copious case examples. Writing style is clear, informative, and interesting; bibliographic references are current and comprehensive; and tables are used effectively to summarize and highlight material. This book will be considered essential to any academic library serving graduate and undergraduate students in health science and nursing, and to practicing professionals who care for the Alzheimers victim and family.-M.A. Stanitis, University of Massachusetts at Amherst
