Exposure to Contaminants in Drinking Water: Estimating Uptake through the Skin and by Inhalation examines the current state of science in this field by identifying and reviewing the available information resources; evaluating various models and approaches; and demonstrating the feasibility of developing estimates of the distribution of absorbed doses of contaminants in drinking water through contact with the skin and by inhalation. This book, the product of a fifteen-member expert working group convened by the Risk Science Institute of the International Life Sciences Institute under a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Water, includes contributions from experts in exposure modeling and measurement; water chemistry; time-activity patterns; dermal and respiratory uptake; and the use of probability distributions in characterizing exposures.

Includes bibliographical references and index.

CHOICE Review

We have come to think of water as an ingested substance and protect it (and thereby us) from polluting materials the same way we do with foods. But water is also used for cooking, showering, bathing, washing, laundering, and cleaning, all of which constitute routes of exposure to water contaminants, particularly via skin and lung uptake. This book is currently the most comprehensive and authoritative treatise on such exposure. Some 15 experts, under the leadership of the International Life Sciences Institute, have contributed six chapters on the subjects of exposure and contaminant characteristics, exposure estimates, and respiratory and dermal uptake, plus a household case study involving chloroform, methyl parathion, and chromium. This book is for researchers and professionals; laypersons and media representatives could easily misinterpret toxicity data. This book discusses risks and risk estimates bordering on the inconsequential (de minimis), so policy makers ought to be cautioned not to ban the use of water, since absence of any of the more than 100 common, often naturally occurring, contaminants can never be achieved, except through distillation and/or fractionation. Graduates through professionals. M. Kroger Pennsylvania State University, University Park Campus
