Library Journal Review

Features over 800 A-to-Z articles on every aspect of poverty. Written by a cast of over 100 experts in the field, the work places special emphasis on current vital statistics on poverty, the causes and effects of poverty, organizations dedicated to fighting poverty, and much more. Given that over 1.2 billion people currently live in extreme poverty (i.e., on less than $1 a day), a resource that tackles the issue in such detail makes for an indispensable addition to all libraries.-Mirela Roncevic (c) Copyright 2010. School Library Journal Review

Gr 11 Up-An informative and comprehensive reference with more than 800 alphabetical, signed entries on all aspects of poverty. Entries, ranging from a few paragraphs to about five pages, cover a wide spectrum of topics, including secular and religious antipoverty organizations and relief initiatives; the special problems of women and children; the causes, economics, history, politics, policy, and measurements and definitions of poverty. Also addressed are countries' efforts to alleviate it; and profiles of people who have influenced economic thought or systems or contributed to relief efforts. Although the essays are generally well written and objective, there is a bias toward asset redistribution as a solution to the problem. Each essay has cross-references and a bibliography. Average-quality black-and-white photos and portraits add little to the text. The two appendixes provide economic data for each American state and global economic profiles. Each volume contains a comprehensive set index. This encyclopedia offers a wealth of statistics and information that is not readily available elsewhere. However, the entries have high reading levels and many include complex technical discussions of statistical methods, international banking, and economic theories. A good choice for high school collections.-Mary Mueller, Rolla Junior High School, MO (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. CHOICE Review

This three-volume encyclopedia offers 800 signed entries that cover various definitions of poverty and techniques to measure it (in 78 articles); reviews of most countries, with their rank on the Human Development Index and Human Poverty Index and their condition (191 articles); and finally, potential causes and effects of poverty (more than 50 articles). Especially interesting are the articles discussing local organizations, intergovernmental organizations, and nongovernmental organizations, as well as theories on how gender, race, and age are intertwined with poverty. An additional feature is a set of articles on US presidents' administrations and efforts to protect segments of the population such as veterans and the aged. This thorough effort brings the definition of poverty out of its narrow income context, while also looking at local grassroots efforts such as Heifer Project International. The full-page articles, followed by short bibliographies, are lucidly written and printed in an easy-to-read font size. ^BSumming Up: Recommended. All academic collections supporting lower-level undergraduates through faculty/researchers; large public library collections serving general readers. H. H. Ives emerita, American University

Booklist Review

Using one encyclopedia to approach the topic of poverty on a global scale is an unusual but effective plan. It provides a format for including all the disciplines that have to do with the study of poverty--economics, political science, sociology, and more--but with one focus. Though the topic is huge, by having the information presented in this way, researchers can do comparisons from a cross-cultural aspect that might otherwise be difficult. Entries are preceded by a topic-oriented Reader's Guide and a chronology that begins in the tenth century BCE and tracks events, legislation, and so forth that affect or define the poor. The chronology is an especially informative and useful way to start. The more than 800 signed articles include see also references and bibliographies. Almost one-quarter of the entries are for nations both from the developed and developing world and often provide historical background in addition to vital statistics and other information on economic characteristics. Definitions of poverty from different parts of the world are included, so that by referring to several articles, it is possible to compare the European Union definition of poverty with one from the Arab world and compare those to the American perspective. Biographical articles cover both the advocates for the poor, such as Mahatma Gandhi and Mother Teresa, and those whose policies advanced the conditions of poverty. Relief organizations such as CARE and Second Harvest, and issues such as Agriculture, Nutrition, Sanitation, and Water, are also covered. Each U.S presidential administration has an entry describing the president's philosophy and how his administration addressed poverty-related issues. Other entries deal with poverty's causes ( Drought, Irish famine, Unemployment) and effects ( Crime, Homelessness, Welfare dependence). A list of more than 100 contributors, an alphabetical list of entries, and a complete index can be found in each volume. Volume 3 contains two appendixes: U.S. State Economic Data, from the U.S. Census, and Country Economic Profiles, from the CIA World Factbook, 2005. These provide the statistics that the articles may not all have. The fact that the international figures all come from a single source allows comparisons. The appendixes, however, will show their age more quickly than the rest of the material. The encyclopedia itself is quite readable. The topics are presented in an engaging and understated manner that invites browsing and further reading within the volumes. Encyclopedia of World Poverty should be seriously considered by all academic and large public libraries. --Danise Hoover Copyright 2006 Booklist
