Booklist Review

Gr. 6-10. The story of political favors that led to Soviet leader Brezhnev's methodical rise to power is engagingly told in this biography. Tracing the Russian's youth in the Ukraine, his strict adherence to the Stalinist doctrine, and his apprenticeship to Nikita Krushchev, the author chronicles Brezhnev's ascent in the Communist party through such attention-grabbing accomplishments as his supervision of the Sputnik I project. Compiled with obvious attention to research, this analytical book includes a chronology but omits useful aids such as a map, an organizational chart of the Soviet government, and a glossary. Although a list of books appears under Further Reading, the titles are adult references rather than children's, and no mention is made of sources the author used in her research. Despite these weaknesses, the volume is noteworthy because of its scholarly and thought-provoking evaluation of the Soviet leader, whose lengthy term in office is seen to still influence the world-power balance as well as Soviet domestic conditions.
