CHOICE Review

A well-edited, highly informative, and important collection of papers that represents new scholarship and major issues facing feminist research in Latin America. Contributors include North American and Latin American scholars whose papers are organized into five major sections. The first section contains a survey of the past ten years of research and suggestions for future directions by June Nash, and a research guide for studying women's work by Neuma Aquiar. Section 2 includes papers on the effects of capitalist industrialization, Andean market women, economic issues facing female heads of households in Jamaica, and Puerto Rican women's employment experiences. Section 3 has two papers on industrial change in Brazil, a study of women in production in La Paz, a comparative study of rural women and agrarian reform in Peru, Chili, and Cuba, and a general overview of women in farming throughout Latin America. Section 4 treats the life and work of Colombian women who have migrated to New York, migrant women in the Venezuelan garment industry, and the effects of gender stereotyping on analysis of migrant settlements in the US, using Dominican settlements as an illustrative case. The last section includes a study of survival strategies used by women who face torture in Latin America, an analysis of women's activism in Bolivia, and an overview of advances in Cuban women's status between 1970 and 1979. Photographs, tables, and bibliographic references enhance this already excellent theoretical and substantive work. The index is useful for cross-referencing papers.
